Why Japanese People Visit Hidden Valleys

Peaceful Japanese mountain valley with a clear emerald river surrounded by dramatic cliffs

Hidden valleys are some of Japan’s most peaceful natural destinations. Surrounded by mountains, forests, and clear rivers, they offer a quiet escape where visitors can relax and enjoy nature away from busy cities.

Many valleys are especially beautiful during the changing seasons. Fresh greenery fills the landscape in spring and summer, vibrant autumn leaves create colorful scenery, and snow transforms the valleys into peaceful winter retreats.

Some of Japan’s best-known hidden valleys include Kiyotsu Gorge in Niigata Prefecture, one of Japan’s Three Great Gorges, and Takachiho Gorge in Miyazaki Prefecture, famous for its dramatic cliffs, emerald-green river, and the beautiful Manai Falls. According to Japanese mythology, Takachiho is a sacred place associated with the descent of the sun goddess Amaterasu’s grandson to Earth, adding deep spiritual significance to its breathtaking scenery.

Many hidden valleys also feature walking trails, waterfalls, suspension bridges, and hot springs, making them ideal places for hiking, photography, and quiet reflection.

For many Japanese people, visiting hidden valleys is more than sightseeing. It is an opportunity to reconnect with nature, appreciate the changing seasons, and discover some of Japan’s most tranquil landscapes.
