Why Japanese People Enjoy Plum Wine

Umeshu, or Japanese plum wine, is one of Japan’s most popular traditional alcoholic drinks. Made by steeping ume (Japanese plums), rock sugar, and liquor, it is known for its sweet, fruity flavor and smooth taste.

Making umeshu at home has long been a seasonal tradition. Every year, around May and June, fresh ume become available, and many families prepare their own plum wine to enjoy several months later. This tradition has been passed down through generations.

Today, umeshu is enjoyed throughout Japan in many ways. It can be served chilled, on the rocks, mixed with soda, or even with hot water in winter. Its lower alcohol content compared with many spirits also makes it popular with a wide range of people.

Visitors interested in umeshu can explore Kishu in Wakayama Prefecture, Japan’s largest producer of ume, or visit the Kitano Tenmangu Plum Garden in Kyoto during plum blossom season to experience the culture surrounding ume.

For many Japanese people, umeshu is more than a drink—it is a taste of the seasons, family traditions, and Japanese hospitality.
