Japan’s railways are famous for their speed and reliability, but many people also enjoy scenic train journeys that travel through mountains, coastlines, and rural landscapes. For many Japanese travelers, the journey is just as enjoyable as the destination.
Japan has more than 27,000 kilometers (17,000 miles) of railway lines, including many routes designed for sightseeing. Large windows, comfortable seating, and seasonal scenery allow passengers to relax while enjoying the view.
Two popular examples are the Sagano Romantic Train in Kyoto, which runs along the Hozugawa River, and the Gono Line, which offers spectacular views of the Sea of Japan between Aomori and Akita. Both are especially beautiful during autumn and winter.
Many scenic trains also feature local cuisine, regional designs, or special observation cars, giving passengers a taste of the area’s unique culture.
For many Japanese people, scenic train journeys offer a peaceful way to experience nature, discover local traditions, and appreciate the changing seasons.
